Meet QS ImpACT’s Community Transformation Champion: Hafizu Hamidu

At QS ImpACT, a UNEP-accredited global charity, we connect universities, organisations, and communities worldwide to foster young talent and lead impactful change for a regenerative future. Last year, our initiatives impacted over 112,000 people across 87 countries, with a thriving community of over 2,100 members and 50 Youth Ambassadors. Every year, QS ImpACT celebrates and recognizes youth who are making a positive impact in their communities through initiatives aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

One of our incredible QS ImpACT Awards Alumni is Hafizu Hamidu from Nigeria, who won the Community Transformation Champion Award. In 2023, Hafizu launched a project to empower internally displaced persons (IDPs), particularly women, in Nigeria by providing them with essential knowledge about the recently concluded elections. Recognizing the marginalisation faced by women (especially IDPs) in electoral participation and candidacy, the project aimed to sensitise 200 IDPs, primarily women, on the electoral processes. By doing so, the campaign sought to ensure that all eligible individuals, including those with disabilities, understood their right to participate in democratic settings. Moreover, the project aimed to equip participants with the necessary knowledge about how the 2023 elections would be conducted, thereby enabling them to engage effectively in the electoral process.

The Wakili Saminaka and the community religious leader (Imam) expressed their appreciation to Hafizu and the team, assuring them of the community’s preparedness to participate in the 2023 General Election. The Camp Women Leader Hajiya Halima, who spoke on behalf of the women, affirmed their commitment to protect their votes and combat electoral malpractices. Hafizu’s impactful initiative is an inspiring example of how dedicated youth can catalyse meaningful change within their communities.

The QS ImpACT Awards are our organisation’s flagship event, celebrating global regeneration and honouring exceptional youth leaders. In 2023, youth around the world made significant impact on their communities, aligning with the SDGs. Among 45 finalists from 18 countries, eight winners were awarded and celebrated for their transformative contributions.
