At QS ImpACT, a UNEP-accredited global charity, we connect universities, organisations, and communities worldwide to foster young talent and lead impactful change for a regenerative future. Last year, our initiatives impacted over 112,000 people across 87 countries, with a thriving community of over 2,100 members and 50 Youth Ambassadors. Every year, QS ImpACT celebrates and recognizes youth who are making a positive impact in their communities through initiatives aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

One of our inspiring QS ImpACT Awards Alumni is Esther Oluwadare from Nigeria, who won the Regeneration Advocate of the Year Award. In Nigeria, the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime revealed alarming statistics: 14.4% (14.3 million) of people between ages 15 and 64 abuse drugs, with adolescents particularly vulnerable due to adventurous tendencies, peer influences, and risk-taking behaviour.

Esther’s program was an educational and intervention initiative targeting substance abuse among adolescents in Nigeria’s southwest region. It aimed to raise awareness, modify behaviours, and reduce the prevalence of drug use among secondary school students. Key elements included educating students about the risks of drugs, fostering supportive environments that promote healthy alternatives, and equipping them with life skills to resist peer pressure and make informed choices.

The program involved pre- and post-assessment questionnaires and IBM SPSS analysis to gauge its impact, revealing that 28% of students had been exposed to illicit drugs. This finding underscored the urgency of the issue and the program’s significance. It involved active student participation, resulting in a noticeable shift in understanding and attitudes towards drug use. The initiative highlighted the critical role of educators, parents, and the community in creating safe spaces for discussions and advocating for robust policies and educational programs to address substance abuse. Esther’s efforts serve as an inspiring example of how local action can lead to profound societal change.

The QS ImpACT Awards are our organisation’s flagship event, celebrating global regeneration and honouring exceptional youth leaders. In 2023, youth around the world made significant impact on their communities, aligning with the SDGs. Among 45 finalists from 18 countries, eight winners were awarded and celebrated for their transformative contributions.
