International Youth Day, celebrated each year on August 12th, is a powerful reminder of the incredible potential young people have to shape a greener, more sustainable future.
For this year’s celebration, we joined forces with the Global Tree Initiative to highlight the strength and brilliant capacity of youth when it comes to their will to fight for a greener and brighter future.
In August 2022, QS Impact and Global Tree Initiative launched the Trees for Merit Challenge, a year-long collaboration designed to promote tree-planting activities across the globe. By the end of the challenge, our collective efforts had resulted in over 10,000 trees being planted in more than 11 countries – a testament to the dedication and enthusiasm of young people determined to make a difference. A shining example of this dedication is Koech Benard from Kenya, who was the winner of our Trees For Merit Challenge, having planted over 800 trees with his local community!
QS ImpACT’s collaboration with Global Tree Initiative revealed something very inspiring: the power of community. Global Tree Initiative encourages people from all walks of life, from all around the world to plant a tree with their community and report their planted trees. By doing so, they have the opportunity to be showcased on Global Tree Initiative’s tree planting map, which proudly displays over 4,136,246 trees planted across 67 countries. This map is not just a visual representation of the trees planted but a testament to the collective impact of our global civilization working together for a common cause.
The 14th Dalai Lama usually says, “When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts”.This quote resonates deeply with our mission, as we hope for youth to learn about environmental stewardship while embodying it through their actions.
For those who may not be able to physically plant trees, the Global Tree Initiative offers the option to sponsor a tree. This allows anyone, anywhere in the world, to contribute to the cause and make our world a greener, healthier place for all present and future generations. Whether through direct action or sponsorship, every contribution counts toward a healthier planet.
By participating in tree-planting initiatives, young people not only help to restore ecosystems but also inspire others to join the movement, and at QS ImpACT, we believe that these efforts deserve recognition.
The QS Impact Awards celebrate individuals and groups who are making significant contributions to sustainability. Youth who plant trees or sponsor tree-planting through the Global Tree Initiative are encouraged to submit an ImpACT Report to be eligible to win an award. This is an opportunity not only to be recognized for their hard work but also to motivate others to follow their example.
Let’s continue to empower young people to take action, support the commendable work of organizations such as the Global Tree Initiative and QS ImpACT, and be acknowledged for their contributions. The world needs more youth working for their communities – and the next tree-planting hero could be you!
